Mechanical Engineering applies the principles of science and mathematics to the design of machinery and equipment used in transportation, manufacturing and energy conversion. Typically mechanical engineers are involved in the design, development, and testing of aircraft and spacecraft, transport vehicles, power plants, manufacturing equipment, computer peripherals, biomedical devices, robots, and climate control in buildings. This field is changing rapidly and many products currently being designed and built by mechanical engineers were not in existence a few years ago.

Building on a base in mathematics, science, and engineering fundamentals, the Bachelor of Science (BS) in Mechanical Engineering (ME) program includes courses on machine design, energy conversion, manufacturing, properties of materials, and includes an extensive application of computers in these areas. The curriculum maintains a balance among basic fundamentals, analytical methods, and design applications which prepare the graduate for both an entry into the engineering profession and long-term career.

The BS ME program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET,
