WELCOME TO THE SPRING DESIGN

INFORMATION PAGE

INTRODUCTION:

Like much of the rest of Virtual Design and Magick's website we are still in phase I: we are still under construction. In phase I of our project we will construct a source of references for design information on springs. In phase II we will construct a website that will be a source of design information in its own right.

SPRINGS, LIKE PALM SPRINGS, RIGHT?

A spring is basically an elastic body whose purpose is to deflect or distort under loading conditions and consequently absorb energy. Springs that are designed for more than a single use also must regain their original shape after being deformed.

FUNCTIONS OF SPRINGS

A few of the most important uses of springs are:

To absorb energy and mitigate shock. Exapmles of this application include shock absorbers for automobiles and Wile E. Coyote's famous sneakers.

To apply a definite force or torque. Automotive valve springs that must hold a follower against a cam are a good example. Spring washers (Belleville springs) are sometimes used under bolt heads to maintain a constant bolt load.

To support moving masses or isolate vibration. Frequently electric motors are mounted on springs to prevent vibration from translating to the foundation. Any kind of vehicle suspension applies here, as well as some earthquake damping devices used in buildings in Japan.

To indicate or control load or torque. Springs are at the heart of scales of all kinds -- bathroom scales, grocer's scales, and many other measurement devices.

TYPES OF SPRINGS

Helical Springs: extension, compression, and torsional.
Flat springs: stamped and leaf.
Other springs: gas and Belleville.
