Engineers Investing in California’s Future:
Elements of Building a California High-Speed Rail

The California High-Speed Rail is one of the largest infrastructure projects in our country’s history. The challenges of implementation range from high-level planning of the project connecting San Francisco and Los Angeles in two hours and forty minutes, as well as the detailed engineering aspects of planning, aesthetic design, sustainability, and stakeholder coordination.

Roelof van Ark, Chief Executive Officer, California High-Speed Rail Authority:
Mr. van Ark is a senior executive with more than 30 years experience as an engineer and manager for some of the world's leading transportation companies. He brings tremendous expertise and leadership to implement California's 800-mile high-speed rail system.
Mr. van Ark was President at Alstom Transportation Inc. for more than five years. He previously served as President of Aviation Security for Invision Technologies Inc. Mr. van Ark spent more than 20 years as an executive, managing director, general manager, senior technical manager and senior project engineer for Siemens, the manufacturers of the popular ICE high speed trains, working in Germany, South Africa and most recently in Sacramento, where he served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Siemens Transportation Systems from 1999 to 2002. Mr. van Ark holds a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and an MBA from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa.

John Popoff, Program Manager, California High-Speed Rail Authority:
Mr. Popoff works on high-level planning for construction of a high-speed rail connecting San Francisco and Los Angeles-Anaheim. For over a decade prior to joining the California High-Speed Rail Authority, Mr. Popoff served as Vice President and Deputy General Manager of Construction, Procurement and System Engineering for the Taiwan High Speed Rail Corporation. John holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Electrical Engineering from University of British Columbia, Canada. Mr. Popoff is a Vice President of Parsons Brinckerhoff, a globally renowned engineering and consulting firm employing over 14,000 employees in 150 offices worldwide.

Gregg Albright, Deputy Director, California High-Speed Rail Authority:
Mr. Albright serves as Deputy Director for the California High-Speed Rail Authority, working on station area planning, aesthetic design guidelines, sustainability, transit connectivity and stakeholder coordination. Prior to joining the California High-Speed Rail Authority, Mr. Albright served as Deputy Secretary for Environmental Policy for the California Business, Transportation and Housing Agency and Deputy Mr. Albright holds a B.S. degree in landscape architecture from California Polytechnic State University. Mr. Albright is a Vice President of Parsons Brinckerhoff, a globally renowned engineering and consulting firm employing over 14,000 employees in 150 offices worldwide.
