Photo: Dean Award Winner, Tim BenderTimothy Bender is graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science in the College of Engineering and Computer Science. Bender is an active member in the Association for Computing Machinery, and is a member of the Engineering Joint Council and the Dean's Council. He has been an active participant and promoter of peer tutoring, and a faithful volunteer for such college and department activities as Preview Day, Engineering Expo and ECS Open House. Tim has been a team leader for 2 years straight in the ACM Programming Contest going to Stanford for the Regional Contest. Bender also under the Guidance of Dr. Scott Gordon worked on a research project in Neural Networks entitled, "Partitioning Strategies for Modular Neural Networks", which has been accepted to be published at the International Joint Conference on Neural Networks. Bender's academic, extracurricular achievements have earned him a job at Northrop Grumman and this award.

Alternative Energy Keys New Careers at Sac State

Photo: Clean Engergy Conference Dean TalkingSacramento State was the center of the regional alternative energy industry today when companies from the Sacramento area set up booths in the University Union to network and share ideas with students. Emir Jose Macari, dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science, said that bringing the event to Sac State gives students an effective way to look for internships and establish connections with companies. Some companies may partner with the school so students can do projects for them, in place of hiring research and development departments that most startup companies cannot afford. This gives students more real-world experience, Macari said.

2008 Dean Award

Photo: Dean Award Winner, Stacie HiratsukaStacie Hiratsuka is graduating with a bachelor’s degree in electrical and electronics engineering and a minor in mathematics in the College of Engineering and Computer Science. Hiratsuka has volunteered at various elementary schools around the Sacramento City Unified School District since she was in middle school, and she is an active member in the engineering honor society Tau Beta Pi, the Society of Women Engineers and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Hiratsuka’s academic, extracurricular and professional achievements have earned her the opportunity to teach English to K-12 students in Thailand’s prestigious Chitralada Royal Palace School on King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s royal grounds. She was one of only five students selected for this program.

Focus On : Hornet Racing Team

Photo: Hornet Racing CarEach year, members of the Sacramento State Society of Automotive Engineers car club build a race car and test engineering principles learned in class on an actual track against other college SAE teams. The open-wheel, formula one-style car is built according to specifications and guidelines provided by the Society of Automobile Engineers. Students are required to design their vehicle and build the majority of it from the ground up.

Focus On: Bridge Retrofit

Photo: Top row left: Brett Anthony, Janice Gainey, Prof. Eric Matsumoto, Dave Van Zanen and Jim Ster. Front row: Andy Wilson, Tom Buno, Joe Graziano and Josh Larson. The bridge in Sacramento State’s Structural Engineering department came “tumbling down,” but, then, that was the whole point of the experiment. More than 20 faculty, staff and students are taking part in a nationally funded test program to develop innovative pre-cast concrete bridge connections that are expected to speed up bridge construction while safely withstanding all levels of earthquakes.

Focus On : Computer Games Course

Photo: Seniors Phoung Nguyen and Michael Daniels demonstrate Starball, the networked multiplayer computer game they designed as their final project in Computer Science 165.While most students spent the end of fall semester surrounded by books and class notes, a small group of classmates in Riverside Hall were playing adventure games, racing simulators and a variety of other 3-D computer games.
But it wasn't all fun and games in Professor John Clevenger's class, where students were presenting their final projects. Clevenger is quick to point out that the course, "Computer Game Architecture & Implementation," requires an understanding of advanced data structures, 3-D computer graphics, artificial intelligence techniques, sound, animation and Newtonian mechanics including force, mass, velocity, and acceleration.
