The investment grant also will pay for the installation of smart meters in 50 buildings on the Sacramento State campus, giving them automated controls to monitor energy usage.

“This grant will help make Sacramento State a truly ‘smart campus,’” Sacramento State president Alexander Gonzalez said in a news release. “It will also leverage the talents of our university’s students and faculty and strengthen the Sacramento region’s position at the cutting-edge of technology.”

Sacramento State will be a model for campuses across the country and “probably the world, said Emir José Macari, dean of the college of engineering.

“It should be able to save us about $5 million a year in energy use,” he said. “It’s very exciting.”
