Summer Transportation Academy (STA) for Undergraduate Students


The purpose of the summer academy is to provide undergraduate students with an exciting and unique opportunity to learn more about graduate studies and career opportunities in transportation field (engineering, planning, and policy). The experience will be particularly valuable to undergraduate students interested in pursuing advanced studies in the UC or CSU system and/or a career in the field of transportation.

Program Highlights:2014 STA Caltrans Translab

  • Ten week summer program, Thursday afternoons from 1 - 5 pm, June 18, 2015 to August 13, 2015 (excluding July 9, 2015)
  • Introduction to transportation graduate programs in both the UC and CSU systems 
  • Exploration of career opportunities in the transportation field
  • Field trips and presentations by transportation researchers and industry professionals
  • Workshops on "Preparing for Graduate School" and "Resume Building"
  • $200 Stipend for academy participants. (Participants are required to attend 7 of 9 days.)


Program participants:

  • Must be an enrolled undergraduate student in a transportation-related program, such as (but not limited to) engineering, urban/regional planning, geography, economics, or public policy.
  • Must have a minimum 2.8 GPA.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  • Must demonstrate interest in the field of transportation engineering, planning, or policy.
  • Should be in their sophomore, junior, or senior year and should be completing their undergraduate program no earlier than January 2016.

  4. Academic transcripts (Unofficial transcripts are acceptable. Official transcripts will be required upon successful acceptance into the program.)

Optional: Up to two letters of recommendation may be submitted on your behalf.  (Letters should be e-mailed directly from referees to the Program Director using the e-mail address provided below.  Letters should address the applicant's interests, intellectual ability, character, the quality of previous work, and the promise of productive career or scholarship.)
