ECS - Career Services Interview Scheduling System

The College of Engineering and Computer Science at Sac State offers you the convenience of interviewing students in the College of Engineering and Computer Science with the Interview room Scheduling System (ISS). The ISS allows you to schedule interview rooms right here in Riverside Hall where the students are! The rooms are available for engineering and computer science employers to interview candidates for student or career positions.

This is a low maintenance system. After you sign up for the date that works for your recruiters, your information will be reviewed and posted for students and alumni to view on the College of Engineering and Computer Science Career Services Office web site. Interested students will send you a resume to review and consider. Your announcement will also be included in our weekly newsletter.

The system is designed to give us the information we need to attract qualified candidates to your position. When you click on the "Schedule an Interview" button, you will be asked for the information we need.

What we need:

  • Complete contact information
  • Company Information
  • Complete job description
  • Requirements

The information will be posted in the weekly newsletter automatically and will hopefully generate resumes for you. After reviewing the resumes you receive, you will contact candidates directly and schedule them for interviews.

The system will allow a company to select a date on which you wish to interview Sac State candidates and then advertise the position(s) you are seeking to fill. If you do not find enough qualified candidates, you may cancel the room. Be sure that you follow the instructions below to get maximum response on your interview schedule.

You will want to solicit resumes through the following:

  1. Post a job listing on our job listing system (JET X)
  2. Host an information session a day or two prior to your visit. Companies with no prior signups have found it to be incredibly productive to host a lunch or dinner meeting to attract candidates. This works amazingly well. I have seen recruiters go from zero candidates prior to their info session to a full schedule for the next day's interviews and leave with several candidates that they hire.
  3. Attend one of our many job fairs. You can sign-up for an invitation to the Engineering and Computer Science - Career Day 2010 on the site. It is filling fast!
  4. View resumes on our web site. Resumes can be found on our web site under the Employer Services section, and then by clicking on the link "View Student Resumes".

Be sure to contact Anyssa Lumbert - lumbert@ecs.csus.edu or 278-6366 - to request driving instructions and a parking permit. The permit can be sent to you or placed at one of the campus information booths for you to pick up as you enter campus. You will need to let Anyssa know which side of campus you will be entering from. Anyssa can also help you arrange for a room for your info session if you chose to hold one.

Important Information About CSUS Candidates:

CSUS is a commuter campus with most of our students working in the field as they work on their degrees. Many students juggle school, families, long commutes, and jobs. Sacramento is quite different than the typical college campus since our labor market here is so robust. Students work for the major state, federal, and local government agencies in addition to private manufacturing, engineering and construction firms. It is much harder to get their attention but well worth the effort to attract these highly qualified candidates.

Ways to increase your visibility with Engineering and Computer Science Candidates:

  1. One of the best ways to get your message out is to become active with student associations. Meetings are held at regularly scheduled times and students do participate. The students control the speaker schedules for their organizations and can be reached through the department web sites that are linked to the picture on our web site - http://www.ecs.csus.edu/career. Hosting a meal like pizza or a taco bar in conjunction with the visit- is always very popular with students.

  2. The fall semester starts on August 31. Fall interviews will start the second week of October.

  3. The most productive day for employers is the annual College of Engineering and Computer Science Career Day. The next year's event is on Friday, March 5, 2010. I am recommending that companies planning to interview in the spring consider holding interviews immediately after Career Day 2010 Collecting resumes and deciding on who to interview at the event worked quite well last spring. Faculty support the event, and students show up in force. Sign-up for an invitation to Career Day 2010!

  4. For Construction Management Students - CM department has an extremely strong partnership with industry (Sacramento Construction Management Education Foundation) and many of the students obtain their career and internship positions through the events that are sponsored or supported by the group. They host an evening with industry held at a local construction site, a fall student welcome, and sponsor the CSUS Reno completion contingent. I would recommend that you consider becoming a part of the partnership. This is definitely the way to go if you are trying to attract the CM candidates. Contact Keith Bisharat for more information (916-278-7976/bisharat@csus.edu).

  5. The demand for CE and CM candidates is extremely high right now. Many companies are courting them. A number of companies in the construction industry are broadening their applicant pool to include mechanical engineering and mechanical engineering technology. They are a great fit for many of the same positions that you would hire a CE or a CM for.
