The market is tightening at an accelerating pace. The recession is deepening and job opportunities are becoming scarce. The Department of Labor just reported the highest unemployment rate in 26 years. That is sobering news for candidates graduating next week and next semester. Things are going to get far worse before they get better. The projections are that the economy will not recover in any substantial way for the next 2 to 5 years. The US unemployment rate is climbing at an alarming rate. Look for the California rate to near 10% in the next year. What does this mean if you are going to be looking for an internship or a job in the next couple of years? It means that it will take extraordinary effort on your part to obtain employment. Employers will be looking to hire the cream of the crop. If you are used to backsliding you are not going to get a job. Determination, drive and discipline are necessary for job seeking in tough times. The main thing you want to avoid is being unemployed. The average length of time it takes to find a job is about 3 to 6 months. Make sure you develop a solid career plan. That time frame may stretch as the economy worsens. Getting your resume to the right place, going through multiple interviews with multiple companies, and finally getting hired takes time. January would be a great time to work on your career plan and develop a strategy for identifying what you want to do in life and developing a plan to attain your career goals. The ECS Career Services Office will have a number of career related programs to help you get things together during winter break, whether you are working on your career or trying to get a student job or summer position. Now is the time to pull out your calendar and schedule time to really think about your future and make a careful plan for getting to where you want to go. There are some windows of opportunity that are opening as the doors slam shut. The government, construction companies, engineering consulting firms, the defense industry, energy companies, utility companies, manufacturing organizations, oil companies, and software companies are all hiring. Not in huge numbers, but they are hiring. Many are still hiring college graduates but many fewer. In the unpleasant event that you are unable to find suitable employment when you graduate or if you already graduated and you are struggling to obtain your first job you need to assess ALL of your options and figure out the best place to be RIGHT NOW given the current market conditions. Postponing graduation or registering for graduate school is one option. If you postpone your graduation you can stay with your student position or you can get a Co-Op position to weather the storm. (Double track on this one- register for graduation and if things look really ugly...forget it! Take more classes!) If you choose to go on to graduate school you can graduate in 2 years when the economy improves with a masters degree and be that much further ahead.
