Demand Exploding for Computer Science and Computer Engineering

I thought I would share with you a letter that I recently sent to a friend…

Dan,

So you thought that all of the jobs in computer science and software engineering had been outsourced. Think again! Tomorrow I am coordinating a major event for the CSUS Department of Computer Science - Quality Software Development Conference. We have received way more response than expected. I thought we would get maybe 50 or 60 students and a couple of professionals who wanted to share information… maybe a simple little ditty for students. I put the info on our web site and sent out a few pieces of email.

We now have 250 people signed up and we have out stripped the space three times. I have re-juggled the rooms repeatedly. Of the people signed up three quarters are IT professionals from throughout the state from industry, business and government. One third of the attendees will be students.

Six outstanding people will be sharing information on how they develop quality software. The first speaker @ 9:00 is Dave Ferguson who sold his local company to Google four years ago. He spent the last four years as director of engineering for Google. He is a CSUS grad. He left Google in August of 2008 and is starting a new company- Mahalo Logic. Incredibly smart! Dave is going to talk about how Google develops SW and cloud computing. Massively big shift in the way we will interact with computer technology. Stretches the imagination.

Check out the info http://www.ecs.csus.edu/career

There is a banner running across the screen. Click on it.

I am kind of perplexed as to why there is so much interest. I did very little publicity. I put it on our web site and sent out a few pieces of email. We are not charging... but many of the people signed up are top IT people- mostly from Sacramento, some are coming from far away too... People are hounding me to attend. We are getting people from way down in the valley- and as far away as San Luis Obispo.

Maybe it is because budgets are tight and people want info... but I am not sure.

It fits with the huge demand for computer science and computer engineering. Enrollment is finally climbing. These grads get up to

$80,000 at graduation with a bachelor’s degree according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers. We are seeing similarly high offers to CS and CpE graduates.

Because of years of skinny enrollments we are graduating precious few...This is true across the country. Offshoring was the culprit. People became afraid to go into computer fields. Something is changing. I am getting a calls from companies who are expecting hiring to explode... even with the current market situation- Intel, HP, Chevron, VSP, DST...

The way you develop SW impacts the safety and security of information.

I am not sure what the angle is but I just have this feeling that there is more below the surface on this. The retirements are looming for the people who entered the field in the 60’s and 70’s. Simultaneously- we have this huge budget mess at the state and federal level... these grads make it possible for companies to deliver products and services better, quicker and cheaper.

It takes 5 years to generate computer engineers and computer scientists... I wonder how education will be funded.

Cici

PS: We have a few extra chairs.

5.0 CPE, CS Job Announcement

Intel Corporation Job Opportunities

Hi Cici!

Thank you for taking the time to help out with our Intel job postings. We appreciate your efforts to get these job opportunities out to your students!

I have attached two job postings. One is for Masters and PhD Intern opportunities, and the other for Masters and PhD Full Time opportunities. These postings are general postings. They don’t refer to specific jobs that are available right now, but they do give instructions on the types of jobs available, qualifications, and details on compensation, locations, and benefits. The postings also list our website, www.intel.com/jobs as the primary contact site for these job opportunities.

The job postings list 7 engineering degrees that we are focusing on, however.
- Electrical Engineering
- Chemistry
- Computer Engineering
- Industrial Engineering
- Computer Science
- Mechanical Engineering
- Chemical Engineering
- Materials Science

We want to focus on these grad students in these specific departments instead of making the posting available to the entire campus. We would not like to have a campus wide posting. Is this possible? It would be ideal to be able to put these postings on your site, but also e-mail the postings to the relevant students. If that is not possible, that’s ok!

Again, thank you, and I look forward to our efforts together!

Regards,

Michael Gecan
