What Way is the Wind Blowing? © Cici Mattiuzzi

The market for engineers in Northern California continues to be strong. There are indications that
things may shift in the near future though. It is not a bad time to make sure you are doing everything
you possibly can to slide into a career related position. If you are in a career position, figure out
what your options are if the worst thing happens. Fall is a good time to assess your situation. Rarely does it happen that layoffs or slow downs come
without some warning. You can usually tell what way the wind is blowing. Indicators abound. The news
has been rife with indicators that things are slowing down. They have even used the “R” word.
Weakness in the housing market and the crisis in mortgage lending has yet to show the full impact on the
economy. The declining value of the dollar against foreign currencies means that American goods will
sell more cheaply, a good thing, but it also means that the cost of raw materials, including petroleum
and building materials will be higher. Reports from the Employment Development Department, for the past two available months, show unemployment
for June up by .4 % and up by another .2 % in July. This is a disturbing trend since employment usually
shows growth in the summer especially in construction. According to David Lyons of the California
Employment Development Department, in the latest employment report, the unemployment rate in the
Sacramento-Arden-Arcade-Roseville Metro Service Area was 5.4 percent in July 2007, up from 5.2 percent in
June 2007. Between June 2007 and July 2007, the total number of wage and salary jobs dropped by 5,200 to
927,700, marking the first monthly decline since January of this year. The greatest declines from June
2007 to July 2007 were seen in construction, information services, and financial services. Overall for the year ending July 2007, there was some good news mixed with the bad. From July 2006 to
July 2007 there were signs of strong hiring in government at local and state levels. Government in this
region expanded by 7500 adding the most jobs of any major industry. According to Lyons, “professional
and business services gained 4,000 positions, which were primarily split between professional and
technical (1,700 jobs) and employment services (2,200 jobs). Health care and social services and leisure
and hospitality each added 2,200 positions as well. Manufacturing reported a smaller increase of 300
jobs. The downturn in the housing market continued as construction jobs fell by 3,100. Correspondingly,
financial activities slipped by 700 jobs in the real estate and mortgage areas.” So what should you do? Get proactive in your approach. Make sure you are spending time focusing on your
career. Weigh your options. Assess whether you are in a good place or it is time for a change. Take
advantage of career classes, career fairs, job leads and professional activities. Network with employed
people to discover interesting places to start your career. Professionals love talking to students and
new grads about what is going on in their industry. Want to know what way the wind is blowing? Just
ask!
