In spite of the recession and rising inflation, this has been a very productive semester.
Many students have received multiple offers and there are lots of opportunities for technical majors. There is no reason to believe that engineering and computer science graduates are going to suffer unduly in response to the current economic downturn. For our graduates and students alike, salaries have been climbing steadily. It’s still a great time to be looking for a job.
If you are an engineering or computer science major, you are in a good position to make a difference in the world. You will be called upon to solve many of the most vexing problems: cleaning the air; developing alternative energy solutions; dealing with waste and waste water issues; transporting people, goods and services more efficiently; and building stable, secure and affordable infrastructure. If you are a problem solver, there is no end to the opportunities that await.
Think of job seeking and career planning as a journey:
This life is not a race to the finish. It’s a journey to be enjoyed and savored. It’s what you do in between that makes a difference. You will have many choices in life. You are not bound to any destiny. You get to choose how you will spend your time and how you will live your life. Make sure that you choose wisely.

Thanks for your help, Cici. The description below is for the opening in which an MS candidate would be the best fit. The other position, for a BS candidate, involves assisting running the same lab in which the MS candidate would work, and would involve the same kind of work, but focused more on the microprocessor, with more administrative and debug tasks. Both positions would be ideal for individuals interested in CPU or system architecture, esp. in the area of power management, which has become a complex and critical part of the CPU and system design. (We are building green machines) If there is one piece of wisdom I could send to any student considering these positions, it’s that taking off a semester for an internship is an investment well worth a delayed graduation. At Intel we provide structured activities to network interns together and with dept. managers and engineers so they can get a sense of what they like. This opportunity opens the door to job offers after graduations. BTW, it’s a stated goal of our intern program to find and be able to offer (at the end of the internship) post-graduation positions to the best interns. Case in point, one of your students worked as an intern 11 months in my lab, will graduate May 23, and has a postion ready for her to start immediatel at one of our campuses in Oregon. Thank you for your help getting the word out. You will perform 3D graphics workload analysis, power and performance modeling, and event-based thermal monitoring validation. You will learn to understand 3D workload power/utilization characteristics and using a high-level simulator, help validate that actual design meets power and thermal goals. This position requires 40 hours of work per week for 6-9 months in Folsom, CA. Minimum Requirements: Requirements for executing the job include a working knowledge of CPU power and/or thermal management schemes such as ACPI , CPU P-state and C-state policies; familiarity with 3D graphics hardware or software algorithms, and good written and verbal communication skills. The ideal candidate also would have some hands-on experience with power modeling or simulation tools, and be familiar with CPU and chipset architecture (including bus architecture, memory technology, I/O subsystems). STUDENT JOB BULLETIN - 84521 California Integrated Waste Management Board Statewide Technical and Analytical Resources Division Research and Applied Technology Branch Special Materials Analysis Section
The California Integrated Waste Management Board is the State agency designated to oversee, manage, and track the 92 million tons of waste generated each year in California. The Board promotes waste reduction, resource conservation, and recycling. The Board is a key player in CaliforniaÕs efforts to reduce the effects of climate change, and to develop policy for hazardous waste and health care waste. The position listed below is available to college students currently enrolled in at least six semester or equivalent quarter units and at least a 2.0 GPA. Applicants are hired through the Foundation for California Community Colleges. Upon receipt of your application, our staff will review your qualifications and will contact you should your education and experience match the requirements of our current opening. If you are not contacted, another candidate my have been chosen for the position.
Job Duties and Responsibilities: Under direction of a lead scientist, the student will be responsible for:
Anyone who is graduating from CSUS should consider working for the state. Some agencies are better than others (more on this later) but the compensation package is fairly attractive. You get 3.5 weeks paid vacation your first year, full health, dental and every holiday you can imagine. You work 40 hours a week and get paid time and half for any overtime you work (if you choose). You get a hefty automatic raise every year and extra vacation time. The starting Salary is a little bit less than industry average, $55k, but when you consider the perks it is a great deal.
Now I know you have all heard that working for the state is horrible. The thing is when looking at state service you need to evaluate agencies on a case by case basis. One agency might have an unlimited budget and all the best technologies while others will have duct tape holding the chairs together. You will know this very soon after you enter the building so it is a non issue. Compare this to a private firm that may sound great when you interview but is actually an awful place to work (60 hour weeks, old tech)
Now that you want to work for the state there is a process you must follow.
First, take the exam: http://www.spb.ca.gov/jobs/exams/exam_start.htm
The one you are looking for is Associate Programmer Analyst. There is one scheduled for 06/17, just around the corner. Sign up quick because slots fill up FAST. As long as you were not asleep during EVERY class you will do fine on the test. I can’t mention specific questions but I guarantee you will laugh out loud when you read some of them. If you must study, go over CSC 130,131,133.
The way it works is after you are done with the exam you are given a Rank. Ranks 1-3 are eligible to be hired right away ("reachable" in state lingo) while ranks 4-6 have to wait until the higher ranked people either drop off the list or decline jobs.
A few weeks after you take your test you will start receiving job requisitions in the mail (job postings). Now this next part is important. Even if you are not interested in the job you should reply to the posting saying you are interested. Get used to this type of awesomeness. This is why: First, when you say you are not interested ("waive") you get a strike on your record. When you get 3 of these your name is taken off the list. Agencies want to waive people on the list so they have reason to hire people lower ranked (usually student interns or other internal Staff).
The next reason to send the job requisition back is you may actually get an interview. The same rule as before applies, if they offer you an interview you must accept it or you will get a waiver. Worst case the job is lame you get to practice your interview skills; Best case you love the job and get hired.
And if you want to get hired, follow all the advice Cici gave in her class. Thank you letters, follow up phone calls, and thank you phone calls all make a huge difference. I actually came to find out the only reason I got the interview was because I followed up my resume with a call.
Also, consider getting a job as a summer intern. It gives the employers a chance to find out what you are made of on the cheap.

Good luck!!
