Just when you think that you can relax with your shiny new degree in hand it dawns on you that you needto get a job. It is time to kick into gear and get moving. Here are the realities: • The average length of time it takes to get a job is 3 to 6 months • Peak hiring seasons are spring and summer • 20% of the jobs are posted- 80% of the jobs are not • Most people will change jobs every 3 to 5 years • The number one way people get jobs is through friends and contacts • Looking for a job is a full time 40 hours per week job Getting out of bed early is the first thing you need to do. If you are really working on getting a job,you need to get up at the time that most working people get up and be at your desk or on your way to aninterview by 7:30. You need to tumble out of bed at 6:00 am and get moving on the day. Your first move after getting out of bed is to exercise. Go jogging, biking, walking, play tennis or goto the gym. In other words, you need to work out. It will reduce the stress and anxiety you feel aboutnot having a job and you will organize your job search plans for the day as you clock the miles. Do thiswith a friend and you will further reduce the stress and the camaraderie will get you moving. Anotherbenefit, people who team up to look for work also report more rapid job acquisition. Your second move is going to be writing your daily "to do" list. Start by listing your goals every 3 to6 months. Then each day write your "to do" list with your goals in mind. You will want to print yourlists and hang on to them so you can see your progress. Writing a goals list and a daily "to do" list aremarks of successful people. In interviews, employers always ask you what your goals are to see if youhave potential. Employers don’t hire people who don’t set goals for themselves and organizetheir time. Here is a sample weekly checklist of what you should be doing if you are seriously looking forwork: 1. Assemble a job search binder and a calendar to organize your search. Create a center from which torun your search. You will need the obvious stuff a phone, a computer, Internet access, etc. You willalso need to view your job search as an adventure... an opportunity to explore your field. A positiveattitude throughout the job search campaign is absolutely required. 2. Hit the web for job postings (JETX receives 7-10 new job listings every day!) and read thenewspapers/news sources daily searching for ideas on which companies and industries are growing in your areas of interest. Study local, state, national and global events. Many times, the crises of today turninto the jobs of tomorrow. Clip and file articles and the names of individuals and companies mentioned inthe articles, and figure out how to make contact with those that interest you. 3. Develop a list of possible companies that hire in your field using faculty, friends, contacts, fromyour reading, the web, and from directories of companies based on your area of interest. 4. Each week, research at least ten companies on your target list and send letters expressing interestand describing your qualifications. Submit your resume/application on line. Follow up with telephonecalls (“Hi, I’m just checking on the status of my application”). Schedule appointments. 5. Telephone ten personal contacts each week and make ten cold calls to people mentioned in articles orin other sources you are using. Get referrals to individuals in your field from each one. Follow-up withemail. And get used to some rejection... don’t let it stop you! Just get more creative the nexttime. 6. Arrange at least 2 to 4 informational interviews with people who are in industries or jobs thatinterest you. (For details on how to do an informational interview go thehttp://www.ecs.csus.edu/career). Get referrals to other professionals from each of your contacts. Alwaysfollow up with thank-you notes (Thank you for speaking with me today and suggesting… I willbe….”). 7. Apply to all employment ads from the web and other sources related to your career objective, even ifyou are “under” or “over” qualified. Contact anyone you know who might know someone in thecompany for referrals to the manager who is doing the hiring. Follow up on your applications withtelephone calls after one to three days. Be sure to copy the job details and make notations for each inyour career binder. 8. Read at least 2 professional journals related to your area of interest, and also look for job listingsin the employment section. 9. Visit your college career center to get leads and to participate in job seeking workshops and alumniservices. 10. Check on any activities being sponsored by professional associations related to your careerinterests. Make new acquaintances; follow up with email and phone calls.
