Demand in Northern California is wild and the salaries are on the rise for all of our majors. Students are reporting multiple offers and some are coming into my office to ask how to let down companies without offending, since they have already decided which offer to take.
Companies that were previously paying below average salaries now find the competition for technical graduates in the Sacramento Metropolitan region is forcing them to reexamine their pay and terms of employment. Companies that hired graduates as "interns" with uncertain future status are finding that they must make more of a commitment if they wish to get the top graduates. Employers are sweetening offers with signing bonuses, tuition reimbursement, company cars, and gas cards.
According to the latest National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Salary Survey, Spring 2007 may be the best job market in recent years for new college graduates. The survey of employers from across the nation indicates that salaries in 26 out of 29 majors show an increase in offers made to new college graduates at the bachelors level. For engineering and computer science graduates data for average offers show growth in all technical majors.
For Computer Science majors the news from NACE is particularly good, with salaries climbing 2.5 percent to $52,177. In 2006, average offers for computer science majors had dropped in both the winter and spring quarters. The 2007 computer science offers are primarily in software design and development. Employers continue to outsource jobs but with salaries in India recently jumping by three fold, employers seem more inclined to keep jobs in the US. US technical employers are now finding ways of balancing off-shoring with maintaining both hardware and software engineering jobs in the US.
Engineering graduates from American universities are finding that it is the quality that counts. Engineering graduates who learn both the theory and the practice of engineering are in demand. A team of CSUS computer engineering faculty recently visited HPs ProCurve division to find out which CSUS learning experiences were most valuable to graduates and to ask engineering managers how CSUS candidates stack up with graduates from other universities- extremely well according to the HP managers. American engineering teams are learning to demonstrate their worth with a solid balance of good leadership, better design, and solid documentation as they work to keep their jobs in the US - things that CSUS grads excel in, according to Frank Reichstein (BSCS 2000), software engineering manager with Hewlett Packard.
Nationally, Civil Engineering graduates are narrowing the gap with other engineering graduates with average salaries jumping 4.8 percent to $47,750. Construction Management average offers rose by 1.9 percent to $46,504. In California demand for CE and CM graduates is driving salaries through the roof. Demand for CE and CM graduates locally is being driven by the public sector, engineering consulting firms, engineering services firms and construction firms.
Average offers to computer engineering graduates rose 3.2 percent to $55,946. Electrical engineering graduates received the lowest increase at 1.6 percent to $54,915. Their entry salaries are already among the highest offered to engineering graduates. Demand for computer engineering and electrical grads is being driving by software engineering firms and the computer/electronics industry.
Mechanical Engineering graduates (ME/MET) took the prize with average salaries rising 5.7 percent to $54,695. Nationally two major employers, aerospace companies and manufacturers drove demand for Mechanical Engineering graduates. This was very good news for mechanical engineering and mechanical engineering technology students worried by the outsourcing of manufacturing jobs. Demand for MEs and METs in the Sacramento region is being driven by a combination hiring sources including the public sector, manufacturing, defense, construction, and energy.
Offers to CSUS engineering and computer science graduates are typically higher than the national average offers with housing costs being some of the highest in the nation. Offers to CSUS graduates usually run in the 90th percentile as shown on the chart below.
