Although the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) in the Spring 2009 Survey reports that they are anticipating a 22% drop in hiring of college graduates, demand for engineering graduates is steady. According to NACE latest salary and hiring survey based on data collected over the past 3 months “engineering services firms account for the largest number of offers made to all new college graduates.”
The relatively low supply of engineering graduates showed most of the engineering disciplines posting salary increases. Computer science salaries dropped for Spring 2009 over Spring 2008, although they are still remarkably high.
It should be noted that the report includes offers for the first months of 2009.
The top employers include engineering services, consulting services, the federal government, and aerospace. Graduates of CSUS received offers from the state, engineering services, the federal government, consulting services and the utilities.
Nationwide the 2009 over 2008 spring salary results for technical major BS degrees are:
Salaries for CSUS graduates tend to run closer to the 90% as shown on the chart below due to the fact that Sacramento is in the high cost of living area of Northern California and students frequently graduate with major project experience and work experience.

Tali L. Alban, J.D, Associate at Townsend and Townsend. Ms. Alban is an associate in Townsend’s Litigation Practice Group. Her legal background includes working as a part of multiple trial teams representing large domestic and multi-national corporations before the International Trade Commission. She also has experience litigating cases in state and federal courts on a variety of matters, including fraud, breach of contract and patent infringement. She can be reached at tlalban@townsend.com.

Mr. Shoiket, who will be joining Ms. Alban, represents clients in complex patent infringement cases, including cases concerning semiconductor design, fabrication and packaging, computer and software technologies, and preparation and use of biological compounds. HDI, the world’s largest IT support organization is hosting a local conference on May 19th in Folsom This conference brings together IT professionals including helpdesk analysts, business analysts, project managers, IT managers, executives, and directors. (This is a fabulous place to network for jobs! It is a really nice group).
HDI holds monthly meetings and would like to reach out to local IT professionals and CS/MIS students for the conference and for other opportunities. A ton of hiring and networking goes on in this organizations. Members include IT professionals with government agencies, and private corporations.
The May 19th event features IT speakers and vendors. The price is $59 for the entire day and includes HDI membership as well as breakfast and lunch! There are some student scholarships available.
