Spring 2008 Salary Data and Positive Economic News © Cici Mattiuzzi

With the latest economic reports of skyrocketing inflation and a declining labor market it is no wonder that people are in my office panicked about the market for engineers and computer professionals. Amazingly, demand for technical majors is still bucking the trend. Perhaps it is because the work they do is so essential. These are the people who bring you electrical power, highways, clean water, clean air, software solutions, computer games, and the latest high tech gadget. (Thank you very much!)

The latest information from the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), the Spring 2008 Salary Survey, just out this week, shows a continuing robust market for technical majors. The average salaries for new college graduates across all majors- technical and non-technical are still climbing, and in some cases astronomically. This is fantastic news for the class of 2008. (It is basic economics- salaries do not climb if there is not demand). According to NACE, “The job market remains positive….employers expect to hire 8% more new college graduates this year…the positive increase in light of significantly deteriorating economic conditions indicates an underlying long-term strength in the college recruiting market. Employers recognize the need to continue hiring new graduates to feed their talent pipelines.”

National salary data from NACE shows significant positive trends. The starting average salary for computer science (CS) grads is up 14.7% to $59,873. Offers to CS grads in software design and development were even higher coming in at an average of $65,379.

Engineering disciplines showed a 6% increase in average salaries from the Spring 2007 average salaries. The average salary offer to civil engineering (CE) graduates increased by 6.7% to $50,940.

Electrical engineering (EEE) new graduate offers averaged $56,944, 3.7% higher than last spring. Interestingly a significant number of offers to EEE majors were for software design and development positions, which came in at an average $57,389.

Computer engineering (CpE) graduate average starting salaries are at $56,944 up 7.2%. Mechanical engineering graduates (ME/MET) saw a 5.7% increase with average offers of $57,821. Mechanical engineering offers from engineering services employers were even higher averaging $58,945.

Construction management (CM) average starting salaries are at $52,745 showing an amazing annual increase of 13.4%. In this region demand for these graduates continues to be exceptionally strong.

The CSUS College of Engineering and Computer Science Career Day 2008 was incredibly productive with students and alumni now reporting multiple interviews and multiple offers. CSUS salaries are very high (50k to 74k at the BS level) with signing bonuses stating at $3000 and running as high as $12,000. Intern and career candidates who followed up with email and phone calls seem to be having the best results. The problem of the month is how to hold off answering one offer while waiting for other offers to come in.

Salaries for CSUS graduates tend to run closer to the 90% as shown on the chart below due to the fact that Sacramento is in the high cost of living area of Northern California and students frequently graduate with major project experience and work experience.
