As a career counselor, I frequently find myself in a position to help individuals who are in transitionfrom one job or career path to the next. Most people change jobs every three to five years. Many peoplemake complete career changes several times over the course of their life. It is always difficult to make a change. Change means giving up the familiar and moving towards theunknown. The fact that the future is unknown is unnerving. Even when things are intolerable, manypeople are reluctant to make the necessary change. I find that discomfort is a critical element inmaking change. It gives people the motivation necessary to do what they need to do to moveforward. Change is inevitable. It is all around us. Engineers are change agents and change masters bydefinition. Disney calls their engineers “imagineers” because their job is to envision what mightbe. Change is the driving force of the high tech economy. Everyone wants the new new thing. No onehankers for the cell phone they had ten years ago. So it is with your career. My job is to coach people through the process. The process is much like the project management task. Ihelp new grads and career changers break down a seemingly unmanageable task into manageablecomponents. The process begins with setting goals and making your goals happen. Goals are really dreams and wishesuntil you engineer a way to make them happen. Nothing gets done unless you have three things: #1. A goal to focus on #2. A plan to make it happen #3. A daily to do list So your task for today is to think about whether now is the time to make a change. If it is, and evenif it’s not, it’s a good time to list your goals and to see if they fit with your current situation. If change is in order, it’s time to develop a plan.
