“Members of the class of 2007 have every reason to celebrate,” according to the National Associationof Colleges and Employers (NACE). NACE reports that there is a 17.4% increase in new college hiringsince last January with 80% of employers reporting that “they are planning to raise salary offers tonew bachelor’s degree graduates.” Engineering and computer science graduates are faring extremely well in the job market. From January 2006to January 2007 most new grad engineering and computer science offers have been increasing and in someinstances quite a bit. Computer Science graduates are seeing their salaries climb once again with a 2 percent increase in theaverage starting salary offers which now stand at $51,070. Computer science graduates in software designand development averaged even higher at $53,989. Civil Engineering average new grad salaries grew by 4.8% to $47,145; Computer Engineering average newgrad salaries increased by 1.9% to $55,936; Electrical/Electronic Engineering starting average salariesincreased by 3.2% to $54,599. Mechanical Engineering became the most sought after degree with average salaries jumping a whopping 7.7%for the year to $54,587. Construction Management starting average salaries were fixed at $46,844. Because CSUS is in the very high cost of living area of Northern California when compared to the rest ofthe country, offers to graduates from the CSUS College of Engineering and Computer Science tend to run onthe high side in the 90% as shown below. Winter 2007 Salary Data Source: National Association of Colleges and Employers Salary Bachelors Degrees High 90% Average Low 25% CE $54,000 $47,145 $44,000 CM $52,000 $46,844 $46,000 CpE $63,000 $55,936 $52,000 CS $60,000 $51,070 $45,000 EEE $61,250 $54,599 $52,000 ME $64,000 $54,587 $50,000 Masters Degrees High 90% Average Low 25% CE * $51,000 * CpE * $70,000 * CS * $66,077 * EEE $80,000 $65,505 $60,000 ME $72,000 $62,885 $60,000 * no offers were reported for statistical analysis Jan-07
Hi Cici, Just thought I’d drop a line to thank you for all your help and support last spring, and to let youknow about a current job vacancy. I was working with Apple Computer Care Support for a short while doing"ipod" phone support were I met a recently graduated CSUS electrical engineering student also workingphone support for over two years. We were both discouraged that neither of us were getting any callbacks on the applications we submitted, and being that my 80% test score put me in the 4th rank, Ididn’t think I would get any state interviews either. I kept sending in the state request forms and then suddenly got called in for two interviews on the sameday. My current supervisor recognized your handy work, and it must have paid off because both the dept.of forestry and of education offered me a position. My supervisor Alan Nakahara graduated from CSUS witha degree in biomedical engineering back in 93 and knew of you, but mostly recognized your resume style, and the fact that I had a portfolio which he said was rare. I am quite happy with my current situation, and very busy learning the computer science guys stuff likeT-SQL, html, VB, ASP.NET 2.0, CSS...etc. to do web based applications. Just don’t tell any of mycomputer engineering friends I’ve turned to the soft side. Anyhow, thanks. I think I read somewhere that only 5% of the companies you submit applications to will actually contactyou back, so give your students a bit of my advice and "keep applying every week". Anyhow, keep up the good work, some of us need that voice of a second mom at college, otherwise like allchildren we tend to "PROCRASTINATE". Or so I’ve been told anyway. William A.
