Many faculty have asked that we set up a location where their students can sign in when they attend Career Day 2008 on Monday. We will have folders with class sign-in lists that faculty provide us with at the reception desk outside of the University Union Ballroom. Many faculty are using the event with its many technical seminars and job fair as a class assignment or a class substitute that day. We are more than happy to accommodate faculty wishes. The final draft flyer including the six seminars is above. ALL students should attend - from the most timid freshmen through the most talented graduate student. We also expect high school and community college students to attend. If you know any they are welcome. The information that students receive at Career Day can make a huge difference in the recruitment, retention, and graduation of our students. Alumni are also invited. If you know someone who is struggling with their job search or with their current employment situation be sure to tell them they are welcome. We have added a number of companies and also dropped a number of companies. The market is definitely fluctuating so it is important that all students get information about their career options and make contact for later networking. There are 130 companies at this point with 4141 openings. I have heard that this may be the last push for some state agencies before the hiring freeze goes into effect. Even those who think that they will be guaranteed a job with their current employer should plan to attend. Things change... Lastly, faculty should plan to attend the event. The companies who attend are frequently represented by CSUS ECS alumni. They absolutely love seeing their esteemed professors and the support staff again and telling you about how what you taught them is being applied in the real world. Come and hear for yourself how your work is making a difference in a life and in the world. You will not be disappointed... unless you miss this event. Thank you for your continued support. Cici
Do’s and Don’t for Career Day Here are some comments from employers who attended previous Career Days... I saved them to share with you before you make the same mistakes at Career Day 2008 DO’S: RESEARCH THE COMPANY BEFORE YOU ATTEND A JOB FAIR "People who impressed me were the ones who checked out the website and read up on the company and knew about the positions we had." FOLLOW UP WITH COMPANIES THAT INTEREST YOU! " I am most impressed and most likely to schedule interviews with students who send a thank you note with a copy of their resume after a job fair. It shows that they take initiative and that they are really interested in my company.... " DON’T’S: DON’T ANSWER A CELL PHONE WHEN YOU HAVE THE RECRUITER’S OR INTERVIEWER’S ATTENTION! TURN OFF YOUR CELL PHONE BEFORE YOU ENTER THE EVENT! "A student’s cell phone rang at the job fair and he had to attend to his message, while being interviewed by a manager." DON’T WALK IN TO A JOB FAIR UNPREPARED! "I was shocked that some people arrived unprepared at Career Day not knowing anything about the company." DON’T TELL THE INTERVIEWER THE JOB SOUNDS BORING... "I had one student who said that the type of work I do can get boring at times. Okay, he’d rather do something else. Well, he’s a CompSci major, so guess what? He’ll be doing my job because he’s an application developer..."
We now have 130 companies signed up for the event. Companies are hiring for student and career positions as well as for experienced professionals. I can get us to the day of the event but the day of the event requires the help of 120+ students and alumni. You can sign up very easily by clicking on the "Help Sign-up Career Day 2008" showing at the top of the picture in the center of the Career Services Office web page at http://www.ecs.csus.edu/career. I am asking people to sign up for just one hour. That is all it takes if we can get everyone to help. 6 days before the event I will be sending email to all of the volunteers with detailed instructions. This is what you will find on my link. Setup: Will help the companies from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. on Career Day with any setup they require. This section is full Door People: Greet the students and alumni at the door throughout the day. Distribute seminar info and company lists to attendees. (Students sign up in 1-hour increments) This section is full Teardown: Will be on hand to help with the tear down including helping the companies take down their displays and returning it to their cars. (Takes 30-40 min when fair ends at 3) 1 more volunteer needed Food Servers: Over see the serving of sweet rolls and coffee in the morning from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. 1 more volunteer needed Backpack Check-in Table Take students backpacks just inside the door. Put a number on the backpack and give the corresponding number to the owner. (Students sign up in 1 hour increments) 5 more volunteers needed
Career Day 2008 promises to be the biggest event ever hosted by the College of Engineering and Computer Science. We have 130 companies attending the day long event in the University Union Ballroom (8 am to 3 pm). With this many companies attending it will be easy to get overwhelmed if you do not have a well developed strategy. A little bit of work in advance of the event can make a big difference for your overall success in connecting with the right company. I would suggest that you use Career Day 2008 as an opportunity to gather information about the various companies that hire individuals with your major and to establish contacts for future networking in companies that interest you. Here is a recipe for success on how to approach a career fair- before, during and after: First scan the list of job fair attendees and select the companies that interest you the most and check out their web pages. The complete list is at http://www.ecs.csus.edu/career. Identify companies attending the job fair that are recruiting your major and rank according to your interest. Tailor your resume for the companies that you are interested in. You will probably need more than one version of your resume and you will want to change the objective as necessary. On the day of the fair, approach companies that interest you the most first. Make contact and get information. ASK QUESTIONS! If you are interested GET A BUSINESS CARD AND PICK UP COMPANY LITERATURE and leave a resume. Send a thank you letter/email and attach another copy of your resume! The types of questions you should be asking: Open ended questions rather than the typical "Are you hiring?" questions will allow you to gain the most useful information. Here are some examples: What types of career possibilities are there for CE (BME, CM, CPE, CS, ME, MET) in your company? What type of training programs do you have? What types of projects does your company work on? What kinds of projects might I expect to work on in my first years with your company? What kind of growth might I expect? What is a typical day like? What makes someone successful in your company? What do you like best about your field/company? What advice would you give a person seeking work in your industry? Can you give me the names of anyone else I should talk with given my interests? (You will have to identify your interests at this point). May I have your business card? (For future contact).

CiCi, I can’t tell you how excited I am to be able to attend this years Career Day for ECS at Sac State. As an ESC alum, it’s really gratifying to be able to return and help your students learn what they can expect when they enter the local job market, and hopefully teach them a bit about RT. As the Director of Information Technology at Regional Transit, I’m also hoping we are able to generate student interest in starting their careers here at RT. Technology students typically don’t think about going to work for a transit agency right out of school (I know I didn’t!), however we have some really cool IT opportunities. We have a fairly small IT team of 15-20 staff, which means that everyone gets to learn and work on everything that we are responsible for. What are we responsible for? How about... A 40 mile, gigabit, fiber optics network linking Light Rail stations 58 local area networks 250+ IP security video cameras and video control center Dozens of .Net and Web software development projects a multi million $ SAP implementation 400+ On-vehicle (bus & Light Rail) computer and security systems Mobil WiFi networks for buses and trains 75+ Linux, Win2K3, and Netware servers 500+ desktop PC users Sounds like a lot of stuff, doesn’t it. IT IS! My teams get to design, develop, implement, and maintain a variety of systems that would normally take a person several years, and several employers, to encounter. I left the private sector 10 years ago (I had been a partner in a dot com in my previous life), and have been at RT ever since. I love it here. Great work environment, great people, great projects, outstanding benefits, and we’re helping our community. I’m hoping to be able to convey some of this next week. Thanks for the opportunity. I look forward to seeing you next week. Sincerely, Roger Thorn Director of Information Technology Sacramento Regional Transit District 916.556.0318
