Tomorrow is Career Day 2009 and it will be the most productive hiring day of the entire year if you are an engineering or computer science student or technical professional in this region. We host THE best technical career fair and career information event in all of Northern California. We get the best organizations that hire engineers and computer professionals every year, year after year. The companies that attend ARE hiring. Why do companies like coming to CSUS to hire? Companies love the applied degrees that are offered here at CSUS. Engineers who graduate from CSUS learn both the theory and the practice of engineering and computer science. Companies love the senior project experience AND most students graduate with real world work experience. This is a really big advantage of going to school at CSUS. We are in a major metropolitan area with key installations for federal, state and local government agencies as well as a robust labor market for high tech, engineering, construction, and consulting firms. Students frequently work part time during their education or pick up great summer internships. 71 companies will be in the CSUS University Union Ballroom from 8-3 hiring techies for student, new grad and experienced positions. Some companies will hold interviews in the afternoon for people they meet in the morning, so get there early and get around to the most interesting companies in the morning. Some companies will host interviews in Riverside Hall next week and the following week. They will fill their interview lists with the candidates they meet at tomorrow’s job fair and seminars. The most successful candidates will be those who do some homework, researching companies, before the event and who look sharp both on paper and in their appearance. There is still time to pick up a new shirt/blouse or polish your shoes or find a nice tie. Researching companies merely means hitting the company web sites for the companies that are most likely to hire your major and finding out what they do. Companies love it when you show up knowing who they and enthusiastic about what they do. Do not disappoint. Rank order the companies by your level of interest and visit them at the job fair in that order. The Monday after Career Day start calling companies to follow up on the contacts you made at Career Day 2009! Next week is the perfect time to schedule interviews or info gathering sessions with the companies in which you are interested. Contact your target employers by both phone and email. Here is what you want to say: “Hi, my name is James Stone and I am just calling to follow up on our conversation at Career Day 2009 at CSUS. You may recall I am a mechanical engineering student and I am interested in exploring opportunities with your organization. I would like to schedule a time when I can come in and speak with someone in engineering who can tell me about what it is like to work in your industry.” If you were told you would be receiving a call about being interviewed and have not yet been contacted: “Hi, my name is James Stone and I am following up on our discussion at Career Day 2009 at CSUS. You indicated that I would be contacted for an interview and I have not received a call yet. Spring break is coming up on March 30th and it would be a perfect time for me to gather information about your organization and to schedule that interview. What works for you? I am open (name the days you are open starting with Monday- the earlier in the week the better)”. Get on it NOW if you want to have a job right away or at least by summer!
