Most people get jobs through direct contact. It is someone you know or someone you will meet who willlead you to your first real job. It will happen through your contacts. Most people report it happensthrough a series of activities- being in the right place at the right time, networking andconnecting. This year’s College of Engineering and Computer Science Career Day 2007 is the perfect way to startyour career. It is a place where you can connect with all of the right people- people who hire engineersand computer scientists. 120 companies will attend with something for everyone. Many of therepresentatives planning to attend are CSUS engineering and computer science graduates. They are hiringinterns as well as career and experienced candidates. You have a lot invested in making a good connection with the right employer at Career Day. The employeris equally invested, if not more so, in finding the right people. Their mission, whether it is ingovernment or business, is to hire staff who can contribute to the success of their organization. Yourmission is to position yourself to obtain the job you deserve and the job in which you will thrive. Usethe day wisely! At the job fair, it is essential for you to make a great first impression. The most essential element ofa good impression is your smile. With a smile you are saying a million things without saying a word. Yourappearance is also very important. You need a nice outfit. At each company booth, you need to smile, shake hands, introduce yourself, share a bit of criticalinformation, ask questions and give them your resume. And you need to do it over and over again, all daylong. Relax. Even if you are nervous in the first few encounters, it will get easier and you will getbetter at it quickly. And that is not all you need to do to do your best and feel comfortable. You need to Prepare! Do your research on the companies attending. Make sure you have reviewed the list(http://www.ecs.csus.edu/career) and that you have your own list of the employers that interest you themost. This is a chance to meet and greet, but you should know who they are in advance. Make sure your resume is perfect and that you have enough copies - 40 copies minimum. Arrive early andplan to stay all day. Give yourself time to meet all of the companies that interest you. Don’tforget to breathe. Smile all day long. And remember: you are going to do just fine.

Use career fairs as an opportunity to gather information about the various companies that hireindividuals with your major and to establish contacts for future networking in companies that interestyou. How to approach a career fair- before, during and after: 1. First scan the list of job fair attendees and select the companies that interest you the most andcheck out their web pages. 2. Identify companies attending the job fair that are recruiting your major and rank according to yourinterest. 3. Tailor your resume for the companies that you are interested in. You will probably need more than oneversion of your resume and you will want to change the objective as necessary. 4. On the day of the fair, approach companies that interest you the most first. Make contact and getinformation. ASK QUESTIONS! 5. If you are interested GET A BUSINESS CARD AND PICK UP COMPANY LITERATURE and leave a resume. 6. Send a thank you letter and enclose another copy of your resume! The types of questions you should be asking: Open ended questions rather than the typical "Are you hiring?" questions will allow you to gain the mostuseful information. Here are some examples: 1. What types of career possibilities are there for CE (BME, CM, CPE, CS, ME, MET) in your company? 2. What type of training programs do you have? 3. What types of projects does your company work on? 4. What kinds of projects might I expect to work on in my first years with your company? What kind ofgrowth might I expect? 5. What is a typical day like? 6. What makes someone successful in your company? 7. What do you like best about your field/company? 8. What advice would you give a person seeking work in your industry? 9. Can you give me the names of anyone else I should talk with given my interests? (You will have toidentify your interests at this point). 10. May I have your business card? (For future contact).
