1.0 All Majors, Alumni Salary Report

Winter 2009 Salary Data and Economic News© Cici Mattiuzzi

Demand for engineering graduates continues to be strong according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers latest salary and hiring survey based on data collected over the past 3 months. “Thanks to relatively low supply, engineering graduates generally are in demand regardless of the economy.” “Although most of the engineering disciplines posted increases, they were much more modest than those they earned just a year ago, despite the demand.”

It should be noted that the report includes a very small portion of the data of the total offers that will be included in the survey for the entire 2008-2009 survey.

The top paid degrees continue to be in the engineering and computer science areas. All 5 of the majors we offer here are in the top ten. The top ten degrees included: Chem E, ME, CS, EEE, CM, CE, Finance, Logistics/Materials Management, Accounting, and Nursing.

Career Day 2009 on Friday, March 6th is showing strong demand for technical majors- When I surveyed the organizations on what is fueling their hiring - here is what they reported (they could cite more than one reason):

    56 New contracts/Projects/Business
    31 Expanding areas of business
    20 New government regulations
    22 New government spending
    16 Population growth
    17 Upcoming Retirements
    31 Growing demand for infrastructure
    3 Growing demand for housing
4 Expanding need for land development
    8 Expanding into international market
    10 Defense Spending
    23 New Technology

This is the break down on which majors are in the highest demand (some organizations hire multiple majors):

    55 Civil Engineering majors
    39 Construction Management majors
    23 Computer Engineering majors
    21 Computer Science majors
    35 Engineering-Electrical & Electronic majors
    38 Mechanical Engineer majors
    14 Mechanical Engineer Tech. majors

The list of companies attending Career Day 2009 www.ecs.csus.edu/career

Nationwide the salary results (Jan 2008 to Jan 2009) for technical major BS degrees are:

Average salary for computer science (CS) new grads: + .1% to $58.419
Average salary offers to civil engineering (CE) new grads: +2.7% to $50,785
Average salary offers to electrical engineering (EEE) new grads: + 1.6% to $57,404
Average salary offers to computer engineering (CpE) new grads: +8.7% to $59,803
Average salary offers to mechanical engineering (ME/MET): + 3.9% to $58,648
Average salary offers to construction management (CM): %NA $52,837

Salaries for CSUS graduates tend to run closer to the 90% as shown on the chart below due to the fact that Sacramento is in the high cost of living area of Northern California and students frequently graduate with major project experience and work experience.

Bachelor’s Degrees:

    High 90% Average Low 25%
    CE $57,000 $50,785 $47,000

Mistakes to Avoid at Career Day 2009

Do’s and Don’t for Career Day- What employers really think...

DO’S:

  1. RESEARCH THE COMPANY BEFORE YOU ATTEND A JOB FAIR "People who impressed me were the ones who checked out the website and read up on the company and knew about the positions we had."
  2. FOLLOW UP WITH COMPANIES THAT INTEREST YOU! " I am most impressed and most likely to schedule interviews with students who send a thank you note with a copy of their resume after a job fair. It shows that they take initiative and that they are really interested in my company.... "

DON’T’S:

  1. DON’T ANSWER A CELL PHONE WHEN YOU HAVE THE RECRUITER’S OR INTERVIEWER’S ATTENTION! TURN OFF YOUR CELL PHONE BEFORE YOU ENTER THE EVENT! "A student’s cell phone rang at the job fair and he had to attend to his message, while being interviewed by a manager."
  2. DON’T WALK IN TO A JOB FAIR UNPREPARED! "I was shocked that some people arrived unprepared at Career Day not knowing anything about the company."
  3. DON’T TELL THE INTERVIEWER THE JOB SOUNDS BORING... "I had one student who said that the type of work I do can get boring at times. Okay, he’d rather do something else. Well, he’s a CompSci major, so guess what? He’ll be doing my job because he’s an application developer..."

Radio Engineering Internship

Department: Engineering

Status: Unpaid

Job Duties:
Are you interested in learning the skills required to become a radio broadcast engineer? Capital Public Radio operates 7 FM broadcast stations throughout central California and Western Nevada. Equipment ranges from the latest state-of-the-art digital audio and transmission facilities to our oldest FM transmitter that has seen broadcast activity since 1958. We seek interns with some analog and digital electronic and computer knowledge, preferably at the sophomore, junior or senior level. The internship involves construction of electronic interface equipment, troubleshooting of audio and RF transmission equipment, some travel and a very occasional overnight project (usually at one of our Sacramento transmitter sites). There is no requirement for tower work, but we ask that you have a respect for safety issues around towers and high voltage radio transmitting equipment. An interest in the Society of Broadcast Engineering’s Certification Programs is highly encouraged

Application Procedure:
To apply for an internship, submit the following items to Capital Public Radio. Interviews for finalists will be set up after these materials are received.
