Most people get jobs through direct contact. It is someone you know or someone you will meet who will lead you to your first real job. It will happen through your contacts. Most people report it happens through a series of activities- being in the right place at the right time, networking and connecting.
This year’s College of Engineering and Computer Science Career Day 2009 is the perfect way to start your career. It is a place where you can connect with all of the right people- people who hire engineers and computer scientists. 72 companies (reporting 4053 openings!) will attend with something for everyone. Many of the representatives planning to attend are CSUS engineering and computer science graduates. They are hiring interns as well as career and experienced candidates.
Technical degrees are not easy to get. You have a lot invested in making a good connection with the right employer at Career Day. The employer is equally invested, if not more so, in finding the right people. Their mission, whether it is in government or business, is to hire staff who can contribute to the success of their organization. Your mission is to position yourself to obtain the job you deserve and the job in which you will thrive. Use the day wisely!
At the job fair, it is essential for you to make a great first impression. The most essential element of a good impression is your smile. With a smile you are saying a million things without saying a word. Your appearance is also very important. You need a nice outfit- a suit if you are graduating; a shirt/blouse and slacks (tie for men) if you are going to find an internship. Look like you are serious and you will be more likely to land a job. Look like you just skate boarded in and you are less likely to get the desired result.
At each company booth, you need to smile, shake hands, introduce yourself, share a bit of critical information, ask questions and give them your resume. And you need to do it over and over again, all day long. Relax. Even if you are nervous in the first few encounters, it will get easier and you will get better at it quickly.
And that is not all you need to do to do your best and feel comfortable. You need to Prepare!
Do not squander this opportunity! Do your research on the companies attending. Make sure you have reviewed the list (www.ecs.csus.edu/career) and that you have your own list of the employers that interest you the most. This is a chance to meet and greet, but you should know who they are in advance.
Make sure your resume is perfect and that you have enough copies - 40 copies minimum. Arrive early and plan to stay all day. Give yourself time to meet all of the companies that interest you. Don’t forget to breathe. Smile all day long. And remember: you are going to do just fine.
Companies can now sign up for Career Day 2009 at http://www.ecs.csus.edu/career/. We opened sign ups in November and the response has been very strong considering the economy. This is the biggest hiring event for technical professionals in Northern California. Students and alumni turn out in droves to connect with potential employers. It is our single most productive hiring day. PUT MARCH 6TH ON YOUR CALENDAR!!!
We now have 72 companies signed up to attend the CSUS College of Engineering Career Day 2009 which will be held on Friday, March 6th. This is amazing! We are seeing steady demand for our majors in spite of the economy. Companies are surveyed about their hiring plans in conjunction with the sign up. The 72 organizations now signed up report having a total of 4053 openings! Here is the breakdown by majors:
48 will be hiring Civil Engineering majors 35 will be hiring Construction Management majors 18 will be hiring Computer Engineering majors 17 report hiring needs for Computer Science majors 30 report hiring needs for Engineering-Electrical & Electronic majors 32 will be hiring Mechanical Engineer majors 10 report hiring needs for Mechanical Engineer Tech. majors

Cici,
I have been advertising our promotional Staff and Senior Programmer Analyst exams. Veterans can now take both our open and promotional exams with the State of California, as long as they meet the minimum qualifications.
I am trying to get a good candidate hiring pool for this exam because we are going to be hiring all of our key programmers from these two lists for a year. Remember the candidate first has to take an exam in the classification that they want to be hired to get on the hiring list. Once they have a reachable rank (1,2, or 3) they can then apply for the job opportunity notices in that classification.
If you know of a candidate that is a veteran and meets the minimum qualifications, please spread the word and have them apply before the final filing date of 2/20/2009. This is a fantastic opportunity!

I know you probably don’t remember me but I am a former student (worked on a senior project of yours) and a 2007 CSUS alum. Out of school I got a job at CalPERS (Largely thanks to your help) and about 6 months ago took a new job in Huntsville AL.
The reason I email is that Huntsville AL is a booming town ; Specifically for Software Engineers. The company I work for (Jacobs Technology) has multiple positions open for entry level Software Developers. Other companies have jobs as well : Lockheed Martin, Boeing,NASA, Raytheon, Ad-Tran, SAIC , etc , etc.
I can’t speak for the other companies but Jacobs is a great place to work. 40 hour workweek every week, all government holidays, paid leave, benefits, and training ... they really care and treat their employees excellent.
Alabama is also a great place to live. It may not offer the diversity of California but it is much cheaper. My salary is the same as it would be in Sacramento and I am in the process of buying a 3 year old, 4 bedroom 2000 sq. foot house on .75 acres for $160,000. Plus, they don’t have to be here for the rest of their life if they don’t want. They can gain experience for a year or two, get their security clearance, and get a job anywhere in the world.
If you have applicants who you might think are interested please have them email me their resume and I can make sure it is seen. As an employee referral they will get priority. Please email me at nate265@gmail.com . I do not want to clog up my work email with lots of big resumes.
