Recently, I was working with a mechanical engineering student who described two concerns she has as she nears her June graduation.
Her first problem is that she is afraid she will not find a job. The second problem is that she is worried about how she will perform on her first job.
Basically, she is worried that she won’’t get a job, and that if she does, they will find out that she doesn’t know anything. These anxieties are universal. It is all about rejection and our basic insecurities. We have all faced it. You want to achieve your goals but you are afraid you might not. I hear it over and over again from new grads as well as from experienced professionals.
To start with, stop worrying about how you will perform on your first job. Companies and government organizations will train you to do the job they hire you for. They are not going to turn you loose on their operation without preparing you to be successful. Government provides some of the most intense training programs around. They run you through rotations in a variety of departments. That could be a week or so of training in each area, followed by a few weeks to practice what you learned. Training programs can run from six months to two years. If you have any inclination that you will not be getting training as a new hire, run, do not walk, to the nearest exit.
Anyone graduating in 2008 needs to worry more about getting that all-important first job. Like most major projects you undertake, you need to have a well thought out plan to achieve your goals. You will need to define what you want, and develop a strategy. Just as you would break down a large project into manageable components, you need to break down your employment search into tasks and activities that you can fit into your already busy schedule.
Make yourself a To Do list
And then?
There is a lot more information on the website, explaining how you can gain the maximum benefit from Career Day. This is not a year to take this matter lightly. There are still tremendous opportunities available, but the labor market has been having mood swings lately. You don’t want to get caught by the back swing.
And one more thing: don’t worry and don’t be afraid! You can’t afford that right now.
