Career Day 2009 hosted by the College of Engineering and Computer Science will be on March 6th. We have 68 companies attending the day long event in the University Union Ballroom (8 am to 3 pm). With this many companies attending it will be easy to get overwhelmed if you do not have a well developed strategy. A little bit of work in advance of the event can make a big difference for your overall success in connecting with the right company.
This year Career Day will be more important than in past years. It is the biggest hiring event all year. As the economy slows it is critical that you plan to attend and network with all of the companies that hire people in your major. There really is no time to waste. You need to get a job before things freeze up. And with the new stimulus package- you will want to have your resume in the hands of potential employers so that when things do really pick up you are well positioned.
I would suggest that your prime goal is to use Career Day 2009 as an opportunity to gather information about the various companies that hire individuals with your major and to establish contacts for future networking in companies that interest you. This is your ticket to a job. Do not miss out!
Here is a recipe for success on how to approach a career fair- before, during and after:
Companies can now sign up for Career Day 2009 at http://www.ecs.csus.edu/career/. We opened sign ups in November and the response has been very strong considering the economy. This is the biggest hiring event for technical professionals in Northern California. Students and alumni turn out in droves to connect with potential employers. It is our single most productive hiring day. PUT MARCH 6TH ON YOUR CALENDAR!!!
We now have 66 companies signed up to attend the CSUS College of Engineering Career Day 2009 which will be held on Friday, March 6th. This is amazing! We are seeing steady demand for our majors in spite of the economy. Companies are surveyed about their hiring plans in conjunction with the sign up. The 66 organizations now signed up report having a total of 1942 openings! Here is the breakdown by majors:
44 will be hiring Civil Engineering majors 32 will be hiring Construction Management majors 15 will be hiring Computer Engineering majors 15 report hiring needs for Computer Science majors 27 report hiring needs for Engineering-Electrical & Electronic majors 30 will be hiring Mechanical Engineer majors 9 report hiring needs for Mechanical Engineer Tech. majors

Company Information Sessions
Cici,
SMUD is proud to be sponsoring two students from the Sacramento area to the 2009 Northwest Public Power Association Engineering and Operations Conference held in Spokane, Washington, April 20 - 23.
The students will need to arrive on April 22 during the day and will depart for home on the 24th, since the conference activities conclude at 10 pm on the 23rd.
This is a new program for the NWPPA organization. We are recruiting 10 students for the program from all over the West and Northwest. This will be an opportunity to meet other students, engineers, tradespersons, professionals, and others in the industry. There is a trade show that runs concurrently with the conference, providing an exceptional opportunity to see utility products, services, tools and equipment first hand.
I will be the mentor for the two Sacramento area students and will be available to assist in getting the most from your experience.
For more information and application material go to: http://www.nwppa.org/web/09EandOstudent_program.shtml.
Please help me identify two to three students at the Junior/Senior level that are interested in an EE with a Power emphasis by providing a referral and putting me in contact with them. The students must be comfortable meeting and talking to unfamiliar people, comfortable in a group setting, interested in utility engineering, and committed to participating in the conference and follow up, and *important* they must be able to pay for all of their travel expenses upfront, AS THEY WILL BE REIMBURSED after the conference by the NWPPA.
I will have them work directly with me on submitting an application. I am recruiting the Sacramento candidates for the program and will be reviewing the applications and making the selection of who will attend. The plan is to bring a Freshman - level student and a Junior or Senior level student, with the expectation that when they return to school, they will provide a presentation/information session for their classmates.
The goal is to have them attend the conference and return to share their experience and talk about what they learned at the conference to a group of students related to their course of study. I’ll be available to help them as well.
Please review the information on the website and be sure to look at all the application materials and the student reimbursement section for all the details.
Thank you for your help in recruiting a good candidate. Please let me know right away if you have any questions or if I can provide additional information.
Sincerely, Harlan Coomes Supervisor, Design Resource Center - Engineering SMUD Distribution Services
