How to Get the Most Out of a Career Fair © Cici Mattiuzzi

Career Day 2009 hosted by the College of Engineering and Computer Science will be on March 6th. We have 68 companies attending the day long event in the University Union Ballroom (8 am to 3 pm). With this many companies attending it will be easy to get overwhelmed if you do not have a well developed strategy. A little bit of work in advance of the event can make a big difference for your overall success in connecting with the right company.

  1. Make sure you have a professional outfit!
  2. Make sure your resume is perfect and that you have 40 copies to distribute!
  3. Be sure to get there early- Work on clearing your calendar now, while you still have some flexibility to shift things.
  4. Do some research on companies that interest you before the event!!!
  5. Write out a nice little introduction for yourself and practice it! (Hi, my name is____. I am majoring in_____. I researched your company on-line and I am really interested in your company. Then hand them your resume. Speak slowly and deliberately. Follow the recipe below for a great experience!)

This year Career Day will be more important than in past years. It is the biggest hiring event all year. As the economy slows it is critical that you plan to attend and network with all of the companies that hire people in your major. There really is no time to waste. You need to get a job before things freeze up. And with the new stimulus package- you will want to have your resume in the hands of potential employers so that when things do really pick up you are well positioned.

I would suggest that your prime goal is to use Career Day 2009 as an opportunity to gather information about the various companies that hire individuals with your major and to establish contacts for future networking in companies that interest you. This is your ticket to a job. Do not miss out!

Here is a recipe for success on how to approach a career fair- before, during and after:

  1. First scan the list of job fair attendees and select the companies that interest you the most and check out their web pages. The complete updated list is at http://www.ecs.csus.edu/career.
  2. Identify companies attending the job fair that are recruiting your major and rank according to your interest.
  3. Tailor your resume for the companies that you are interested in. You will probably need more than one version of your resume and you will want to change the objective as necessary.
  4. On the day of the fair, approach companies that interest you the most first. Make contact and get information. ASK QUESTIONS!
  5. If you are interested GET A BUSINESS CARD AND PICK UP COMPANY LITERATURE and leave a resume.
  6. Send a thank you letter/email and attach another copy of your resume!
The types of questions you should be asking:
Open ended questions rather than the typical "Are you hiring?" questions will allow you to gain the most useful information. Here are some examples:
  1. What types of career possibilities are there for CE (BME, CM, CPE, CS, ME, MET) in your company?
  2. What type of training programs do you have?
  3. What types of projects does your company work on?
  4. What kinds of projects might I expect to work on in my first years with your company? What kind of growth might I expect?
  5. What is a typical day like?
  6. What makes someone successful in your company?
  7. What do you like best about your field/company?
  8. What advice would you give a person seeking work in your industry?
  9. Can you give me the names of anyone else I should talk with given my interests? (You will have to identify your interests at this point).
  10. May I have your business card? (For future contact).

Conference Opportunity for EEEpwr Students- Great Way to Meet Employers and Professionals

Cici,

SMUD is proud to be sponsoring two students from the Sacramento area to the 2009 Northwest Public Power Association Engineering and Operations Conference held in Spokane, Washington, April 20 - 23.

The students will need to arrive on April 22 during the day and will depart for home on the 24th, since the conference activities conclude at 10 pm on the 23rd.

This is a new program for the NWPPA organization. We are recruiting 10 students for the program from all over the West and Northwest. This will be an opportunity to meet other students, engineers, tradespersons, professionals, and others in the industry. There is a trade show that runs concurrently with the conference, providing an exceptional opportunity to see utility products, services, tools and equipment first hand.

I will be the mentor for the two Sacramento area students and will be available to assist in getting the most from your experience.

For more information and application material go to:
http://www.nwppa.org/web/09EandOstudent_program.shtml.

Please help me identify two to three students at the Junior/Senior level that are interested in an EE with a Power emphasis by providing a referral and putting me in contact with them. The students must be comfortable meeting and talking to unfamiliar people, comfortable in a group setting, interested in utility engineering, and committed to participating in the conference and follow up, and *important* they must be able to pay for all of their travel expenses upfront, AS THEY WILL BE REIMBURSED after the conference by the NWPPA.

I will have them work directly with me on submitting an application. I am recruiting the Sacramento candidates for the program and will be reviewing the applications and making the selection of who will attend. The plan is to bring a Freshman - level student and a Junior or Senior level student, with the expectation that when they return to school, they will provide a presentation/information session for their classmates.

The goal is to have them attend the conference and return to share their experience and talk about what they learned at the conference to a group of students related to their course of study. I’ll be available to help them as well.

Please review the information on the website and be sure to look at all the application materials and the student reimbursement section for all the details.

Thank you for your help in recruiting a good candidate. Please let me know right away if you have any questions or if I can provide additional information.

Sincerely,
Harlan Coomes
Supervisor, Design Resource Center - Engineering
SMUD Distribution Services

Deadline for application is 25th February,2009.

Interested students can send their application and resume to cici at: cici@ecs.csus.edu
