Success in life is tied to planning ahead and making the right moves. Rare is the person who can just letthings happen and find success. For students, that means starting the semester right. By the time thesemester is a few weeks, old some students will find that they are already behind. This semester is a particularly promising one. Companies are lined up to hire engineering and computerscience candidates. Being in the right place, at the right time, with the right stuff, is critical. There is no time to waste! Once you have figured out your class schedule and study plan, it is essentialthat you get tightly organized around your career plan and job search strategy. For graduating seniors and new alumni, you should already have a resume, a portfolio, cover lettertemplates and a career binder. Your career binder needs to include a to do list, a calendar with upcoming events, and a spreadsheet with application tracking and deadlines. Include a contacts section tokeep track of recruiters and corporate contacts. You will also need an indexed section with copies ofevery job you apply for and notes on your activities. It is also important to have well refined interview skills. If you are not completely comfortable withinterviewing, it is time to work on it. Candidates who report success in interviews frequently indicatethat they spend as much as six hours before hand preparing. Develop a list of potential employers basedon your interests and career goals. Research the companies on your list and study notes and texts frompast classes that are relevant to your target companies. Find a list of frequently asked questions andtailor them to your preferred employer audience. (The Career Services Office web site is a great placeto find good questions). Practice your answers to the questions with a friend. Taking a career planning class and attending workshops on resume writing and interview techniques is oneof the easiest ways to figure out how to create the best possible image of your career self. Even if youthink you don’t have time, you really don’t have the luxury of just winging it onthis. Waste your time and you waste your life.
One hour, one day per week, to figure out what you want to do with the rest of your life. This is one ofthe best classes you can take. You need this class!!! It will get you ready for the spring hiringseason! Work on your career plan this spring and get the job that is best for you! Be ready to meet employers atthe Spring Career Day- We now have CE/EEE/ME194 (1 unit): Career Planning in Engineering and Engineering Technology Topics covered include: identification of skills & interests job search strategies goal setting & time management interview techniques resume writing & portfolio development salary negotiating keeping your career moving forward CSC 192 (1 unit): Career Planning for Computer Science Professionals Topics covered include: part 1 identification of skills & interests job search strategies goal setting & time management interview techniques resume writing & portfolio construction salary negotiating part 2 guest speakers from industry
