Engineering Workforce Forum Invitation

There is still space!

The College of Engineering and Computer Science at Sacramento State is hosting a forum titled "Sacramento
Region Engineering Workforce" on Thursday, Jan. 25 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., designed to address the growing
need for engineers and IT professionals in the region. “The focus of the forum will be formulating ideas as to how we can increase the enrollment, retention
and graduation of engineers for our region so we can better serve the needs of the community,” says
Emir Jose Macari, dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science. Dan Kennedy, editor of the Sacramento Business Journal will be the keynote speaker and David Lyons, labor
analyst for the California Employment Development Department, will provide statistics on the critical
need for engineering and computer science talent during the next decade. Agenda topics: * Demographic Changes and Labor Market Dynamics * Recruitment, Retention, Graduation and Placement of Engineering and Computer Science students * Industry Growth Areas: - Civil Infrastructure Development - Sustainable Growth/Environmental Protection - Clean Energy - Micro-and Nanotechnology * Strategies for Developing Relevant Engineering Education/Curriculum * Strategies for Student Success: Mentoring The College of Engineering and Computer Science is inviting representatives from industry and government
to work with educators to find both short-term and long-term solutions. “We hope that the outcome will be a strategic plan that will enable us to develop a sustained and
well-qualified technological workforce for our region,” Dean Marcari says. To RSVP and for more

Starting the Semester Right © Cici Mattiuzzi

Success in life is tied to planning ahead and making the right moves. Rare is the person who can just let
things happen and find success. For students, that means starting the semester right. By the time the
semester is a few weeks, old some students will find that they are already behind. This semester is a particularly promising one. Companies are lined up to hire engineering and computer
science candidates. Being in the right place, at the right time, with the right stuff, is critical.
There is no time to waste! Once you have figured out your class schedule and study plan, it is essential
that you get tightly organized around your career plan and job search strategy. For graduating seniors and new alumni, you should already have a resume, a portfolio, cover letter
templates and a career binder. Your career binder needs to include a to do list, a calendar with up
coming events, and a spreadsheet with application tracking and deadlines. Include a contacts section to
keep track of recruiters and corporate contacts. You will also need an indexed section with copies of
every job you apply for and notes on your activities. It is also important to have well refined interview skills. If you are not completely comfortable with
interviewing, it is time to work on it. Candidates who report success in interviews frequently indicate
that they spend as much as six hours before hand preparing. Develop a list of potential employers based
on your interests and career goals. Research the companies on your list and study notes and texts from
past classes that are relevant to your target companies. Find a list of frequently asked questions and
tailor them to your preferred employer audience. (The Career Services Office web site is a great place
to find good questions). Practice your answers to the questions with a friend. Taking a career planning class and attending workshops on resume writing and interview techniques is one
of the easiest ways to figure out how to create the best possible image of your career self. Even if you
think you don’t have time, you really don’t have the luxury of just winging it on
this. Waste your time and you waste your life.

Intel Hiring

Cici -

My team is looking to hire an entry-level software engineer, possibly a recent college graduate.
I’ve pasted the job posting below. Our team maintains a complex automated build system that runs
on a SQL Server database, is heavily object-oriented, and implemented in C# (.net). The work is
technically challenging and interesting, and the hiring manager is exceptional...and it’s a fun
team to work with, too. The person that is hired would be working with a team of 20 developers, helping
to automate the compilation of chipset driver software (it can take 6-8 hours to compile some drivers,
which makes automation of this process crucial). If you have any strong applicants, encourage them to submit their applications to Intel.com. I’d
be happy to look at resumes and pass along those that look promising. Key skills are experience with SQL
Server, .NET (or Java), and XML with a solid understanding of Object Oriented Programming. The other
primary qualification is strong communication/teamwork skills. HTML/Javascript experience is also nice.
(this is an excellent opportunity for an Recent College Graduate (RCG) - and it demonstrates how
important internships are...as the kind of skills we’re looking for are not what is normally picked
up in school, but rather in the workplace) Take Care, Rich Layne Ops Architecture/Software Engineer Chipset Group Graphics Engineering - Operations and Capabilities Software Engineer Responsibilities and Details Description In this position, your primary responsibilities will be sustaining and enabling work in support of an
automated build system. In addition, you will be responsible for enhancing and implementing technical
solutions, supporting and improving existing production infrastructure, researching and recommending
technology changes and contributing to application development from design to deployment. Your
responsibilities will include but not be limited to: * Develop, design, and improve build automation components and processes for greater flexibility and
performance. * Develop tools to automate, add new features or performance improvements to the build environment. * Support the deployment of builds to live environments, including maintaining source and data branches
in version control, and debugging issues related to deployment. * Maintaining and enhancing existing software applications * Involved in some new application development, application design, development, testing, maintenance,
troubleshooting, repair, review, analysis, modifications and documentation * Participate in the Build Working Group to propose solutions and recommendations to improve the build
system Qualifications You should possess a relevant educational qualification and work experience. Additional qualifications
include: * Experience supporting and creating client applications, and client user interfaces * Experience in designing and creating SQL* databases, SQL* applications and Transact* SQL* * .NET* and C# experience (.NET* with VB* .NET* would be considered) * Software development life cycle experience * Object oriented development experience * Windows* server administration experience (IIS* in particular) would be an added advantage * Experience with build technologies such as Install Shield, Visual Studio, DDK/WDK, makefiles, Perl,
etc. would be an added advantage * Experience using source control systems with ClearCase* would be an added advantage * Experience with XML data structures and XQUERY expressions would be an added advantage * Experience with ASP.Net, HTML, JavaScript, CSS would be an added advantage Business Group Employees in Intel’s Mobility Group design and implement the Intel mobile technology used in
notebook computers, phones, ultra-mobile PCs and other portable devices. Intel’s industry leading
technology includes processors, chipsets, Enhanced Data for GSM Environment (EDGE), Universal Mobile
Telecommunications System (UMTS), High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA), Wi-Fi and WiMAX wireless
radios. These industry-leading technologies are driving the new mobile era of semiconductors, where
people will carry their computing with them, making it truly personal. This group is growing very
quickly, and has the broadest set of mobile and wireless technologies in the industry. How to Apply: Post your resume on the ECS Career Service Office web site at www.ecs.csus.edu/career and Rich Layne
will be watching for qualified candidates.
