Employment Prescreening – Drug, Credit, DMV and Myspace Problems © Cici Mattiuzzi 11/31/08

In the midst of your college days, it is hard to think about the consequences of your recreational activities. After all, most people in college are young, on their own, and answering to no one. For most college students, there is no one depending on you. But at a certain point, everyone has to grow up and stop engaging in high-risk behaviors. Breaking a leg snow boarding, getting arrested for drunk driving, going bankrupt for spending indiscretions, or being rejected from a job after testing positive on a drug test are sobering and maturing experiences.

Companies are definitely hiring, and for some students, job offers will be coming in fast and furiously. That’s a good thing, but there can be some obstacles that need to be removed. Now is the time to clean up any problems in your background. There is hardly an issue that I have not seen that cannot be cleaned up. There is hardly a mess bigger than failing to clean something up thinking that no one will ever know. Companies will find any and all things you have to hide.

Companies are testing for drug use and they are using increasingly sophisticated methods to detect not only your drug use, but also your exposure to drugs at parties you may have attended where drugs were being used. You should expect to have your urine, your blood and even your hair tested. Even if you are not using marijuana yourself, your hair can retain the drug if you are present where it was being smoked. (Companies are also checking credit and criminal records).

Here is how it will happen. You think it will be weeks before you are hired. You meet with a company at a job fair, there is a positive connection and you go for an interview. You interview well, and you are given an offer on the spot or in a day or two. All of a sudden, you are in a dilemma. As soon as you accept the offer, you will be required to go for a drug test, your credit history will be reviewed, your DMV records will be reviewed and your MySpace space will be invaded! You were at a party and you smoked marijuana last weekend, and Bam! It strikes you. You will not be able to pass the drug test.

A positive drug test is definitely a deal breaker. No one will hire you after you test positive. The risks are just too high. After you are employed, you can be fired for drug use. No company wants to incur the costs of having a drug user on board and many test their employees randomly. It is not just about your performance at work. They are also concerned about the cost of your health care if you are going to endanger yourself.

Drug tests are not your only problem. One student reported that he had had a $67,000 job offer withdrawn for a DUI he had failed to clean up with the driver training course he thought he didn’t have time to take. That same student had a credit problem for failing to payoff a credit card three years earlier. I also had a student who was "interrogated" by Hewlett Packard for his edgy comments on his senior project blog. After a full day of fabulous interviewing the promising job prospects were dashed by the closing interview where his blog was reviewed in detail.

What should you do right now? Grow up! Stop taking drugs! Stop hanging around people who do! If you drink, do so in moderation, and under no circumstances should you drive, even if you have had only a little alcohol. If you have credit problems, clean them up now! Sanitize your Internet presence immediately. If you don’t know how to fix your Internet image find a geek to help you!

If you do have an immediate situation that is going to give you heartache, come in to my office immediately and I we will talk about the best course of action. There are things you can do before you accept the offer. Once you have accepted the offer, things move too fast to do anything.

Request for Help from Chancellor Regarding CSU Budget

FROM: Charles B. Reed, CSU Chancellor
Lillian Taiz, president, California Faculty Association
Pat Gantt, president, CSU Employees Union
Floyd Anscombe, president, Union of American Physicians and Dentists
James Banks, president, United Auto Workers
Charles Goetzl, president, Academic Professionals of California
Sgt. Jim Procida, president, State University Police Association

RE: CSU Budget

As we begin a new year at the California State University, it is clear that 2008 will present significant budget challenges for the CSU system. Faced with a growing $14.5 billion state budget deficit, Governor Schwarzenegger has proposed a $312.9 million cut to the CSU budget approved by the board of trustees for the 2008-09 fiscal year. The proposed budget fails to fund access for 10,000 students and puts at risk our ability to provide quality education for the nearly 450,000 students already enrolled.

In the face of these proposed budget reductions, the CSU community - faculty, students, staff, alumni, administrators and the Board of Trustees - have agreed to work together to advocate that the legislature and the Governor consider alternative solutions. We are all alarmed by the $386.1 million reduction to the CSU budget consisting of the Governor’s unallocated cut of $312.9 million and the $73.2 million necessary to avoid a 10 percent student fee increase in the 2008-09 academic year.

This funding reduction comes only three years after our budget was reduced by over $500 million during the 2002-03 and 2004-05 fiscal years, which led to significantly reduced student access, as well as a dramatic increase in student fees. History will likely be repeated if the Governor’s proposed CSU budget reductions are sustained by the legislature.

Some policymakers believe that we should "live within our means" without new taxes and that resources to fund public services should be generated by a stronger California economy. As you know, the CSU is California’s economic engine, strengthening the economy by graduating 90,000 students into the state’s workforce every year.

We play a major role in the state’s workforce in the areas of nursing, teaching, agriculture, business, public administration, and engineering. The CSU returns $4.41 to California’s economy annually for every $1 invested by the state. Given the state’s General Fund condition, we believe investing in the CSU is a smart solution to address the state’s fiscal deficit.

Working together, the CSU community is urging the legislature and the Governor to support alternative options to maintain the state’s investment in California’s economic engine -- the CSU. We are also asking the legislature and the Governor to find other sources of revenue - other than higher fees for our students and their families - as a way to support the CSU budget. There needs to be a more balanced budget approach that considers the CSU as a valuable investment in the future economy of California.

We would like to ask all members of the CSU community to help us advocate for the California State University by writing to your legislators, talking with your friends, and making your voice heard about the importance of restoring our budget and protecting the state’s investment in higher education. As the budget process proceeds, we will be asking you to join us in our efforts to ensure that the CSU gets the budget our students and California deserves.

CSUS Power Engineering Society holds its first Industry Here For You (IHFY) forum

To All:

It is officially the first day of the spring 2008 semester and with the New Year brings exciting events for the CSUS Power Engineering Society. This semester our organization is holding its first Industry Here For You (IHFY) forum. This event was tailored to assist students in making critical career decisions. With so many different fields within the power engineering industry and the heavy school workload, many students do not have the time to determine what they want to do with their degrees. By bringing representatives from different fields of power engineering and allowing students to inquire about their professions, the CSUS PES believes this will assist students in applying their degrees.

The IHFY forum will be taking place on February 12th, 2008 from 12:00pm to 2:00pm. The event will be located in the CSUS Union on the third floor inside the Delta Suite. Food and beverages will be provided for all attendees. This event is open to everyone, but due to space constraints, there will only be approximately 50-60 seats. Large organizations such as the Pacific Gas and Electric Company and the California Energy Commission will be present the day of the IHFY. We are expecting 6-7 industry representatives to be on campus from the two hours listed above answering questions students may have about the work they do. All names of participating companies/organizations will be listed on our website, www.csus.edu/org/pes/index.html, a few days before the event.

During this first week of school the CSUS PES will be recruiting new members in front of Santa Clara Hall. Our booth will have officers on hand to answer any questions you may have about the Industry Here For You forum. You can also reach us at CSUSPES@gmail.com if you have any questions or concerns. We look forward to answering any questions you may have about the organization or our events.

Best Regards,

David Thai

Applications Available for Space Telescope Science Institute Summer Student Program

The Space Telescope Science Institute has announced its Summer Student Program for college undergraduates. The program will run 10 weeks from June through August 2008. STScI is located in Baltimore, Md., on the Homewood campus of Johns Hopkins University.

The Summer Student Program is centered upon one-on-one student interaction with a scientist working at the Institute. The diverse range of scientific interests includes the study of Earth’s solar system, interacting binary stars, quasars at the edge of the universe and the quest for intelligent life elsewhere. The goal is to place students in a true research
environment where students will participate directly in research, including data acquisition, reduction and interpretation. At the end of the program, students will present their summer’s work at an informal symposium of their peers and mentors.

The Summer Student Program is oriented toward upper-division college undergraduates, typically students between their junior and senior years. Most participants are physics or astronomy students, but applications are welcome from anyone with enough interest and experience in science who wants to take part in a research experience. Foreign students are welcome to apply. Applications are due Feb. 20, 2008.
