When the economy gets tight, job seekers tend to get anxious and jump at the first thing that comesalong. When the economy is hot, people also tend to jump at what looks good without analyzing allpossibilities. It is just easier to take what is offered when it is offered. Patience is very important as you decide who you will allow to employ you in your first job aftergraduation. Time is precious. You don’t want to waste your time or your talents working in a jobthat takes you nowhere. Find a job that allows you to thrive. It is much more difficult to untangleyourself later when you find you are in the wrong place. The most important thing you can do in analyzing a potential job and employer is to focus on what youwill learn. You want to find a company where you will get excellent training and an opportunity tocontinue your education. The training you receive in the first years after graduation sets the tone foryour career growth and development, and throughout your life. Check out the web sites of companies youare considering, and see if there is any information on their training programs. When you areinterviewing for a position, ask about the training program and the company’s policy on support forcontinuing education. You want to know that you will have the opportunity to continuously update yourknowledge and skills. An engineer or computer scientist who becomes obsolete is about as useful asWindows 3.0. Second, make sure that the job is going to push the limits of your expertise. You want an opportunity tostretch yourself and to be challenged. An engineer who is not challenged quickly becomes bored. Seek acompany that is at the cutting edge of its industry. Companies that are growing and expanding areusually doing so because they are industry leaders. You will also want to find a manager who will empower you, not micro-manage you. Having a boss whomentors you and helps you adapt to your new job and new work environment is absolutely critical. I hadan alum stop by my office who had been laid off from his first job after just 9 months. He feltabsolutely devastated. After a bit of probing, he told me that he had received no training, and that themanager for his project had changed three times in five months... definitely a recipe for failure... Hefelt that it was his fault, but in fact, the company had failed him. The reality of the job market is that it takes about three to six months of full time looking (40 hoursper week) to find a good job. Invest in yourself; take the time to do it right. Find the job that givesyou what you need to thrive. Take the time to research the companies in which you are interested. Makecontacts and explore your options so that you can make a good decision. Be patient and do your homework. It will definitely pay off!
